Plymouth is a city of 243,795 inhabitants (2001 census) in the southwest of England, or alternatively the Westcountry, and is situated within the traditional county of Devon. It is located at the mouths of the rivers Plym and Tamar and at the head of one of the world's largest and most spectacular natural harbours, the Plymouth Sound. The city has a rich maritime past and was once one of the two most important Royal Navy bases in the United Kingdom, a factor that made the city a prime target of the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. After the destruction of the dockyards and city centre in the blitz of 1941, Plymouth was rebuilt under the guidance of architect Patrick Abercrombie and is now one of the few remaining naval dockyards in the United Kingdom and the largest naval base in Western Europe. Important locations in the city include The Royal Citadel, Devonport Dockyard and The Barbican from where the Pilgrims left for the New World in 1620.

People born in Plymouth are known as Plymothians or less formally as Janners. In the Royal Navy, "Guzz" is a nickname for Devonport, from its original radio callsign.

Plymouth Photography is the result of over 30 years dedication to the art of photography....I will be listing and sharing the images captured through the camera between the mid eighties to present day.. Athough based in Plymouth ,there are a lot of images taken from all over Europe and overseas. These will be listed on dave gartland.co.uk

I started experimenting with photography at the age of 7, putting a pair of sunglasses in front of an old camera creating weird and wonderful sunsets...at the age of 16 bought a Practica camera with my first months wages, and started to take portraits of people and within the same  year started taking wedding and portrait photography.

Buy the age of 19, Plymouth Sound Radio offered me the chance to photograph for them , a lot of their press and promotoion work, like the sixties road show, the hit man road show, and many promotional days.

Within ten years 1 took well in excess of 300 weddings, "Gold in Memories" Photography was the name used and soon I had to employ 3 other photographers to assist in the demand of the services on offer. My Pictures have sold through picture agencies around the world, and at present I am supplying high quality digital images to www.istock.com the largest online picture agency in the world.

I have always combined my love of photography with my other hobbies, the martial arts (karitsu) and the love of the fifties Rock "n" Roll scene (midnight rockers) where I seem to be currently building a superb reputation photographing rock n roll bands and events throughout the South West, Take a look at the "rock n roll " section.
